Long Tom Pass
Situated between the little towns of Lydenburg and Sabie, the Long Tom pass is an absolutely fantastic experience for any biker. The pass is situated in a forestry region, which already tells you that you must be on the look out for Diesel and fuel spills. There are some serious hair-pin bends and turns, so be careful and rather enjoy the scenery at a leisurely pace if you are new to this area. Abraham Espag built the road under contract in 1871 with picks and shovels. The pass as used today was opened in 1953 and was tarred in 1964. The pass derives its name from a famous skirmish between Boers and Brits in 1900 on this road when the Boers used a cannon called the Long Tom, of which a replica can still be seen near the road.
