Maguga Dam - is one of those amazingly beautiful places that started because they build a dam there.  The Maguga dam forms part of the Komati Basin Water Project, a joint venture between Swaziland and South Africa. Once the project is completed the dam system will comprise the Driekoppies Dam on the Lomati River in South Africa, the Maguga Dam in Swaziland, and various other gauging weirs and measuring devices necessary for the proper operation of the dams. The area is breathtakingly beautiful, and puts you smack-bang in the heart of rural Swaziland.

Maguga Lodge was built shortly after the completion of the dam, and overlooks the dam and dam wall. The lodge promises to become a major attraction in the region for fisherman, adventure seekers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Accommodation consists of luxury air-conditioned thatch roof chalets scattered all over the area, within close proximity of the bar and restaurant facility. From the bar there are stunning views over the dam, and nothing beats sipping a sundowner on the deck overlooking all this beauty. Security is good, and they welcome motorcyclists. It is also a good base from which to explore the rest of Swaziland. Mbabane and Ngwenya is within an hours drive, whilst Pigg’s Peak hotel and Casino is literally just around the corner.

The lodge is accessible from South Africa, and Mozambique via good tar roads. For dual purpose motorcyclists the road between Swaziland and Barberton via the Bulembu border post is an absolute must.

Pigg’s Peak Hotel & Casino - is situated in the north of Swaziland, and not far away from the northern most border with South Africa, Jeppe’s Reef. This hotel came into being in the 1980’s when South Africans were not allowed to gamble in South Africa under the previous regime. In those days Swaziland was a favorite escape for South Africans who wanted to enjoy a holiday in beautiful natural surroundings, whilst also trying their luck at gambling. Today the emphasis is more on holiday makers enjoying the area and conferencing.

It is still a great venue, and a good place from which to explore the area. It is also ideal as a venue for club runs etc. The hotel rooms are all luxurious with air conditioning, and there is also a lovely pool deck and pool bar to relax at. Good place, good food, good security and they welcome motorcyclists.

The lodge is accessible from South Africa, and Mozambique via good tar roads. For dual purpose motorcyclists the road between Swaziland and Barberton via the Bulembu border post is an absolute must. Part of it is dirt, and not suitable for touring and sport motorcycles. It is also a good day outing if you are staying in the Barberton area.
